Playoff Schedule

Big win leads to 2nd seed in playoffs

Doublewide held on for a huge 11-10 victory last night over Ballz Deep, which catapulted Doublewide from 5th in the standings all the way up to 2nd - leading into next week's playoffs.

Doublewide led 9-2 going into the bottom of the 6th inning, but Ballz Deep's sticks got hot as they scored 5 to cut the lead to 9-7. Doublewide got 2 big runs in the top of the 7th (with 2 outs), which ended up being the difference since Ballz Deep scored twice in the bottom of the inning. The final out came on a 2-run homer by Ballz Deep, which was an out because it was their 4th homerun of the game.

As the 2nd seed in the league playoffs, Doublewide (9-6-1) will host the #7 seed Team Streicher's (5-11) at 8 p.m. The teams split their two games during the regular season. A second game against either #3 PT Mortgage or #6 BMW will follow at 9:15.

Congratulations to Dirty Grizzlies for winning the regular season championship!

The final regular season standings are:

1. Dirty Grizzlies (11-5-1)
2. Doublewide (9-6-1)
3. PT Mortgage (9-6-1)
4. Wild Turkeys (9-7)
5. Ballz Deep (9-7)
6. BMW (5-9-2)
7. Team Streicher's (5-11)
8. Amish Donkey Mob (5-11)

Winning!

The story of the year continues. We struggle to find 10 guys that are able to show up. However, even though short handed and missing three of our key players we pounded Wild Turkeys 14-0 in a game that only took 35 minutes to play. Cuff lowered his team leading ERA to 11.48 (FYI...I have no f'ing idea) on the season behind a complete game shut out that included one strikeout. Primus finally learned how to field a ground ball and played superb D at 2nd base. One last tune up next week against Ballz Deep before playoffs start. Currently we are in 5th place in the standings so we get to play the spoiler in the playoffs. That is if we all show up! ;)

Bloodbath

After possibly the worse showing in Doublewide's illustrious history last week, dropping two games to bottom of the barrel squads, we showed up last night with a rag-tag mixture of scrubs and subs.  We then proceeded to beat the shit out of poor old BMW.  After a close first inning, we went on to score a combined 22 runs in two innings on our way to a route of the scrappy (and sometimes crabby) BMW team.  As an added bonus, we got to see their usually hot-headed pitcher completely fall apart and take himself out of the game.  I am not really sure who played the best.  It was pretty much a team effort.  Watching people scared shitless from the surprise fireworks show following the game was pretty fun too.

Bottom line, whatever we did last night, keep doing it....

Games at 7 and 9 next week with a break in the middle - better bring some beers and bug-spray.

Updated Schedule

I have updated the schedule based on what Barry sent out last week.  Lets hope we remember how to play softball tomorrow night.  We play the two last place teams so let's keep rolling with two more wins.  At least our pitcher has been practicing during the break (see picture below).

Great Form!

Rained Out

Tonight's games have been postponed due to rain. No word yet on when they will be made up.

We're Comin'!

After a slow start to the season, Doublewide is starting to look like the team that won both the summer and fall league championships last year.

On Tuesday, Doublewide pounded both PT/General Mortgage and Wild Turkeys to pull to within one game of the league lead. The best part of the night was watching PT's pitcher walk off the field after walking a couple batters - screaming at the umpire. I think we walked 2 or 3 times that inning and had about 10 hits - not sure you can blame the ump for us hitting well.

A bright spot for Doublewide was Derick Primus - who like Alexi Casilla - took a few weeks to show up, but he's starting to earn his roster spot (even though an opposing team referred to him as a "scab"). He was only retired once all night.

The two wins brought Doublewide to 5-3-1. PT/General Mortgage is still leading the league with a 6-2-1 record, but...WE'RE COMIN'!

Next weeks games: 6 p.m. vs. Wild Turkeys and then @ Dirty Grizzlies (who always seem to have our number). A couple of tough games - let's stay hot!

Player of the Week - Mr. Scott Ronglien

The german moses was smoking the ball all over the field. Probably because he gets so much rest between innings.  Does it annoy anyone else when you look over when we are on defense and Scott is over there enjoying a nice chew and taking practice cuts in the on-deck circle?  I guess if he keeps hitting like this, I dont care.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VU6UHBYJOUw

We're Commin....

Sorry it took me so long to post.  I will try to exercise more haste after future wins.  Yeah that's right...I said win.  Doublewide took the field Tuesday for the late game against a tough Ballz Deep squad.  After giving up the proverbial 10 runs in the first inning, we were not to be discouraged.  Especially since we witnessed our opponent balls-deep into the mixed adult beverages before the game near the lower picnic table.  We scraped 9 back in the bottom of the first and went on to add 17 more leading to a 27-18 victory to bring us back within striking distance of the league leaders.  Bottom line is...whatever the hell we did on Tuesday with the bats, KEEP DOING IT.  In my opinion, Tuesday night was a good example of what happens when we become patient at the plate (exception: Tim).  The funny thing is, we waited until we had a 40 mph wind to show the patience.  Lets show the same patience at the plate during dead calm nights.  We are all capable of driving the ball with a strike on us so lets start making the pitchers work a little bit.  Notice how when we were patient, we had less pop flies and more lasers?

LETS KEEP IT UP.  It is nice to show up on Tuesdays and have fun (aka win).  We have a tough double-header next week against PT and the Turkeys who have both been hot.  PT continues to embarrass teams with their uncanny ability to utilize their age, wisdom, surgeon-like hitting, and beer guts as their keys to victory. The Turkeys are fresh off a big upset win of the Dirty G's.  We will have to show up with our A game.  Next week's game is definitely a momentum changer in the league if we play like we should.  We won so we have a player of the week (see main page on sidebar).

Disclaimer: Player of the week is chosen by me and is not necessarily reflective of the player that played the best.  Plus, we don't keep stats and my memory sucks.

Until next time...

Other News around the League:
  • Good news: Dirty Griz lost, Ballz Deep lost
  • Bad news: PT crushes again.  Turkeys are hot.

5/17 Recap

The first game started and ended ugly against PT Mortgage. The game was fairly close until about the 5th inning when again the bats went silent and the gloves failed us miserably. The 17-1 Doublewide summer team that played sick defense all last summer had yet to show any signs of that team . PT put a pretty good beat down on us the last couple of innings and ended up winning the game 24-8.

The second game we showed some signs from the team we had last year. The only big change was we went back to playing 4 infielders and 4 outfielders for the first time since the 2009 season. The bats came alive and defense stepped up. The game turned into a homerun contest with several cars getting dotted in the parking lot. Doublewide ended up winning the game 16-8 in game that was never really close.

Our record now stands 2-2-1. The league is wide open this year so it should be a very exciting summer.

Side Note: Ryan hit into a double play. (12 Pack)

Week in Review

I apologize for not posting a Tuesday night recap sooner, but I was too busy drying off.  Where do I begin, we show up, get going.  I think we gave up 4 runs in the first inning.  We really need to stop doing that.  I want to know what it is like to play with a lead.  Then the shit hit the fan.  All hell broke loose.  We had down pouring rains, strong winds, hail, tornado sirens, and....an incompetent umpire that had the decision making capacity of a 2 year old.  So huddle around for a while.  Meanwhile, I know that if we somehow continued that game, we would not win it.  So the rain slowed temporarily, and we continued the game while using a white T-shirt sticking out of a puddle for home plate.  I think we put up 0's in the 7th and the 8th before ending in a TIE!  Yes, that's right....a tie.  I had a brief (anonymous) discussion with the director of the league and made her aware of the horrible quality of the folks they call umpires and also the extreme inconsistency of their regulations.

Then we faced a team with 9 guys (then 8 guys).  Somehow, even there was no catcher on their defense, we decided to hold people up at 3rd.  Needless to say, our base running needs some work.  It might even be time to bring my third base coaching skills out of retirement.  I think we ended up winning fairly handedly after what the ump said was a time limit.

Here is a list of "firsts" for me:
1. Got to play softball in lightning directly above the field.
2. Got to play softball in hail.
3. Got to play softball in a tornado warning (heard the sirens).
4. Got to play softball while using a t-shirt in a puddle of water as home plate.
5. Got to wade through standing water on my way to and from the field.
6. Got to watch BW hit solo home runs.
7. Got to see two of our own players standing on the same base.

All in all, not a bad night all things considered, except we will have that annoying tie in our record all damn season.  Lets just hope that it doesn't come back to bite us come playoff time.

Until next time....

Tonight

Well, let's hope the thunderstorms hold off for the evening (20% chance).  We have ourselves a big double-header week against two undefeated teams.  Hopefully we can pull our heads out of our asses.  We shall see...

At least we saw the no-no

We may have sucked it up pretty bad Tuesday night against the Dirty G's, but at least we got to see some quality baseball at the bar after the game (and the 20 pitchers of beer were pretty good too).  Back to the softball game.  Not much to say.  Bats were flat.  Fielding was non-existent.  Whenever we got runners, we proceeded to hit infield flies.  Never really got anything going.  I guess this is proof that we needed that scrimmage game.  Oh well, hopefully we removed all the rust and are ready to go for a double header next week so that we can get back into the win column.  I don't even have any shit to talk.  Bottom line is we got smoked.  Good game Grizz.  We shall see you again.

2011 Team Case Rules

You owe the team a 12-pack of beer if:
1. You strike out or foul out.
2. You ground into a double play.
3. You make two outs in the same inning.
4. Pop up to the infield twice in one game.
5. You commit three errors in one inning.
6. You didn't bring your glove or cleats to the game.
7. If you go "O" fer, minimum 4 at-bats in a game.

Qualifiers:
*A $20 bill payable to the team can substitute a paid case of beer.
*$20 payment can be paid towards bar tab at the Spur after the game.
*When using the word "case" it refers to nothing other than beer.
*You must buy a full 24-can case if you choose to buy Busch, PBR, Old Milwaukee or any other shit beers out of the far cooler in the liqueur store.

Game 5/03 vs. Dirty G's

Well.  It sounds like we may actually be able to play this week.  Forecasts call for 60 degree highs and sun.  But beware, the low for the evening is 32 so dress accordingly.  As for the game, I will just be happy to play anything but one-pitch, that is if I can even walk on Tuesday after playing in that awful tournament on Saturday in Apple Valley.  A few words of wisdom from the old Cowbell....Don't make the first actual physical activity you do for the summer (and the last 8 months) involve playing 5 consecutive 9 inning one-pitch games in 40 degree rainy weather with hurricane winds.  I am not completely certain, but I think I am hurting in joints and muscles that I wasn't even aware were present.

No word on the jerseys, probably won't have them this week so wear the old trusty blacks.

Season Opener Weather Outlook Not Good

According to the weather terrorists, tomorrow's high is 45 degrees with a 90 % chance of precipitation.  Stay tuned to the blog and/or the Minnetonka Rec weather hotline and/or Barry for updates or cancellations.  And if we do play...everyone remember your crappy bats.
